You think you’ve seen it all at Paris Fashion Week. Then Céline Dion grabs a microphone and the whole thing turns into a concert.

That’s exactly what happened on Monday night (September 28) when the 58-year-old icon delivered the surprise of the week — possibly the season — by closing out Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris “Express Your Worth” with a live performance of “I’m Alive.” Nobody announced it. No teaser, no rumor, no leaked soundcheck video. She just walked out onto a runway facing the Eiffel Tower and started singing, and suddenly a fashion show became one of those “where were you when” moments people will talk about for years.

The ninth edition of L’Oréal Paris’s open-air spectacular was already stacked. Held outdoors at Place Joffre, between the Eiffel Tower and the École Militaire, the show has become a Fashion Week fixture — the one runway where actual celebrities walk instead of just sitting front row. This year the ambassador lineup included Kendall Jenner in a sheer black halterneck dress, Heidi Klum, Jane Fonda, Cara Delevingne in a sparkling red gown, Eva Longoria, Viola Davis, Simone Ashley, Aja Naomi King, Andie MacDowell, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Indian film star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, and Paralympic champion Beatrice Vio.

And then Céline out-sang all of them.

The Surprise Nobody Saw Coming

The genius of the moment was how little warning there was. The models had walked. The crowd — thousands strong, phones already up — was settling into that comfortable end-of-show energy where everyone’s checking their photos and deciding where to go for dinner. Then the music shifted, the lights changed, and out came Céline.

She chose “I’m Alive,” her 2002 hit from A New Day Has Come, which — let’s be honest — was the perfect pick. It’s upbeat without being frantic, euphoric without being cheesy, and it doubles as a statement. After everything she’s been through in recent years, belting out “I’m alive” on a runway in Paris hits a little different than it did two decades ago. It’s not just a song anymore; it’s a report from the other side.

She didn’t stand rooted to one spot, either. Céline worked the runway like she’d been doing it all night — moving, smiling, turning to different sections of the crowd while giant screens projected close-ups behind her. Thousands of phones went up. Of course they did.

And when she finished, the finale took on a life of its own: the show’s stars joined her on the runway. Viola Davis, Eva Longoria, Simone Ashley, and Aja Naomi King walked out to stand beside her — a genuinely lovely image, some of the most famous women in entertainment surrounding one of the most famous voices in music, all lit up against the Eiffel Tower. For a show themed around self-worth and solidarity among women, it’s hard to imagine a stronger closing picture.

Dressed for the Occasion

You don’t walk a L’Oréal runway in just anything, and Céline understood the assignment. She wore a sculptural black gown with a fitted strapless bodice and a softly flared hem — sleek, dramatic, and perfectly suited to the scale of the setting. Her blonde hair fell loose around her shoulders in tousled layers, and she finished the look with sparkling jewelry, including pieces from Boucheron.

It was a study in restraint: one color, one silhouette, no gimmicks. Which, honestly, is the whole Céline brand at this point. She doesn’t need the theatrics. Put her in a black dress in front of a landmark and hand her a microphone, and she’ll give you the most talked-about 10 minutes of Fashion Week. Plenty of designers would kill for that kind of presence. She got it for free by being herself.

That said — the bar for fashion moments that night was high. Kendall’s sheer halterneck moment, Cara’s sparkling red gown, Jane Fonda looking every bit the legend at 88 — the runway was not short on headline looks. But here’s the thing about a surprise live vocal performance: it reorders your brain. The clothes become the warm-up act. Every editor who went home and led their coverage with the dresses had to rewrite their lede.

A Comeback Still Writing Itself

Context matters here, and this comeback is the story of the year in music.

Céline’s last full concert before her Paris residency took place in March 2020. The pandemic shut down her Courage World Tour, and then came the diagnosis that changed everything: in 2022, she revealed she had stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that affects the muscles and can make singing — the one thing she’s built her entire life around — extraordinarily difficult. The remaining tour dates were canceled. For years, the question hanging over one of the greatest voices of all time was whether she’d ever perform properly again.

Then, on September 12 of this year, she answered it: her Paris residency kicked off, marking her first full concert in more than six years. The residency runs 26 shows in the French capital — 16 across September and October, with 10 more planned for May 2027 — featuring songs in both English and French. Paris was a deliberate choice, and an emotional one. This is the city that crowned her a global star back when she won Eurovision for Switzerland in 1988, singing in French. Coming back to a stage here, of all places, feels like a homecoming layered on top of a comeback.

The residency’s opening night setlist reportedly drew from across her catalog — the big ballads, the French classics, the moments that made her a household name on two continents. And the reviews have been the kind that make you tear up a little: a voice that suffered through illness and silence, coming back strong in the city that first loved it.

Monday’s fashion-week performance lands right in the middle of that arc. She’s not easing back in anymore. She’s out there — on runways, on rooftops of cars, everywhere.

The Weeks That Built the Moment

Because the runway surprise wasn’t even the first spontaneous Céline moment of September. Earlier in the month, the “My Heart Will Go On” singer climbed onto the roof of a car outside her Paris hotel and led an impromptu singalong with the crowd gathered below — singing, dancing, completely unguarded. The videos went everywhere, and for good reason: there’s something deeply moving about watching someone who nearly lost her voice use it just for the joy of it, no stage required.

She’s been treating Paris like her personal playground all month — popping up, performing, reminding everyone that the comeback isn’t a marketing plan, it’s a person who loves to sing and finally can again. The L’Oréal show just happened to be the biggest stage yet for that energy, with the Eiffel Tower doing the lighting design.

There’s also a nice symmetry in the partnership: Céline has been a L’Oréal Paris global ambassador since 2019. So this wasn’t a brand hiring a famous face for a stunt — it was a brand’s own ambassador, mid-comeback, giving their runway show the kind of finale money genuinely can’t buy. You can book a performer. You can’t book that moment.

Stars Turned Audience

One of the best details of the night: the celebrities weren’t just watching — they became part of the act. When Viola Davis, Eva Longoria, Simone Ashley, and Aja Naomi King walked out to join Céline for the finale, the dynamic flipped. These are women who command every room they enter, and they were visibly thrilled just to stand next to her. That’s the thing about Céline Dion in 2026: she has entered the rare tier of fame where other famous people become fans.

And honestly, the whole night was a reminder of what Paris Fashion Week does best when it’s firing on all cylinders. Rihanna was holding court front row at the Matières Fécales show — the label behind Zendaya’s angel-wings moment at The Odyssey premiere in New York this summer. Cynthia Erivo turned up at a Tiffany & Co. event at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The women’s spring-summer collections run through October 6, with Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Schiaparelli, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Balenciaga, and Loewe still to show — and new creative heads at Dior and Chanel expected to sharpen their visions.

But whatever happens in the next week of shows, Monday night set a bar. Good luck topping a surprise Céline Dion concert under the Eiffel Tower. The designers will try — that’s their job — but some moments don’t get topped. They just get remembered.

Céline Dion is back, she’s in Paris, and she’s not being quiet about it. “I’m Alive” indeed.
