Nobody saw this one coming — and honestly, that’s what made it so good.

Olivia Colman, the Oscar-winning actress who’s built a career out of playing queens, grieving mothers, and women with secrets behind their smiles, just added an entirely new line to her resume: runway model. The 52-year-old star made a completely unexpected appearance on the catwalk at Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2027 show on Sunday (October 4), held at the Palais d’Iéna in Paris, sending a genuine jolt through the final days of Paris Fashion Week.

It was one of those moments where the audience does a collective double-take. You expect the front row to be full of familiar faces — that’s fashion week’s whole thing — but the runway itself is supposed to belong to the professionals. Except Miu Miu has never really played by the rules, and Colman, striding out in a leather skirt suit with flats and her hair swept into a low ponytail, looked entirely at home where she had no business being. Which, in a way, is the most Miu Miu thing possible.

A Surprise Worth the Gasps

Let’s be honest: celebrity runway cameos aren’t exactly rare anymore. Fashion houses trot out a famous face every season to guarantee the headlines. But this one landed differently, mostly because Colman isn’t your typical fashion-week plaything. She’s not an influencer with a stylist. She’s not a nepo-adjacent pop star with a cosmetics line. She’s one of the most decorated actresses of her generation — an Academy Award winner, a beloved small-screen fixture, and, by all accounts, one of the most self-deprecating people in British show business.

That’s precisely why it worked. The woman who once admitted she spent most of her career assuming she’d be fired from every job walked that runway like she owned it. The leather skirt suit was classic Miu Miu — sharp, a little rebellious, grown-up without being stuffy — and the flats were a nice touch. Practical. Unfussy. Very Colman.

The show itself carried the title “Here and Now,” and in a season where every house is trying to say something about the moment, that feels like a fitting banner for an Oscar winner stepping onto the catwalk with zero warning.

Not the Only Familiar Face on the Runway

Of course, Colman wasn’t the only name in the mix — Miu Miu went all-in on star power this season. The celebrity-heavy runway cast included actor Jamie Bell, Noah Jupe, Chandler Kinney, Igby Rigney, Katherine Waterston, and supermodel Liu Wen, among others.

There was something sweet about sharing the catwalk with Emma Corrin, Colman’s co-star from the upcoming Pride and Prejudice adaptation — the two are about to spend a lot of time in corsets together, so trotting down a runway in Miu Miu leather probably felt like a day off by comparison.

The generational flavor ran deep, too. Louisa Jacobson, Meryl Streep’s daughter, walked the show, as did Ella Bleu Travolta, daughter of John Travolta — a reminder that fashion week increasingly runs on famous DNA. And then there was Gigi Hadid, who brought actual professional modeling experience to a lineup that, for the most part, earned its fame elsewhere. Gigi’s the ringer, the one person up there who does this for a living, and her presence gave the whole thing a sense of grounding. Someone had to know which way to turn at the end of the catwalk.

“Here and Now”: What the Collection Brought

Beyond the casting spectacle, the Spring/Summer 2027 collection had plenty to talk about on its own. The show introduced some eye-catching collaborations, including Wrangler x Miu Miu upcycled denim — a pairing that sounds odd on paper and probably works beautifully in person — and the New Balance x Miu Miu RC150 sneaker.

That’s very much the Miu Miu formula right now: high-low mashups, unexpected partners, and a sense that luxury doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. Upcycled denim from a cowboy brand sharing space with one of Prada’s sister labels’ slickest silhouettes is exactly the kind of thing that makes fashion people argue in group chats for weeks. Mission accomplished.

The Front Row Was Stacked, Too

If the runway was full of surprises, the audience was its own red carpet. Seated in the front row were Maude Apatow, Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne, Amelia Dimoldenberg, McKenna Grace, Janhvi Kapoor, Joey King, Emma Mackey, Kate Mara, Lili Reinhart, Nara Smith, and more.

That’s a pretty wild cross-section of who’s who right now — actors, a viral interviewer, a fashion-world mainstay, an internet-famous cook — and it tells you everything about where Miu Miu sits in the culture. The brand has become a magnet for women who are interesting rather than merely famous, which might be the cleverest positioning in fashion at the moment. Everyone in that front row has a personality you could actually describe.

Colman’s Very Busy Autumn

The runway moment caps off what has been a characteristically packed stretch for Colman. Just last week, she and Alexander Skarsgård hit the red carpet at the Zurich Film Festival for the premiere of their new film Wicker, where she looked every bit the movie star in the traditional sense — posing, smiling, doing the thing. A few days later, she traded all of that for a catwalk. The woman contains multitudes.

Of course, the bigger picture here is that Colman has spent the better part of two decades becoming one of those actors who can do literally anything and make it feel inevitable. She won the Oscar for The Favourite in 2019, playing Queen Anne with a mix of fury and fragility that nobody else could have pulled off. She anchored The Crown’s third and fourth seasons as Queen Elizabeth II, finding the private loneliness inside the most public woman in the world. She earned another Oscar nomination for The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s devastating directorial debut, playing a mother haunted by the choices she made.

And before all of that, she was the comic heart of Peep Show and Broadchurch’s grieving detective — a reminder that her range was always the point. The industry just took a while to catch up.

There’s something fitting about an actress this accomplished casually moonlighting as a model. Colman has never seemed particularly interested in the performance of fame — she’s famous for being funny in interviews, for crying at awards shows, for generally behaving like a person rather than a brand. Walking a Miu Miu runway fits right into that pattern: of course she’d say yes to the weird, joyful thing.

Miu Miu’s Celebrity Casting Playbook

It’s worth pausing on why Miu Miu keeps doing this — and why it keeps working. The house, under Miuccia Prada, has built a reputation for casting women who are known for something other than modeling: actresses, musicians, cultural figures who bring their own narrative to the clothes. It turns the runway into a kind of storytelling exercise. You’re not just watching garments move; you’re watching personalities inhabit them.

That strategy pays off in attention, obviously — every season, the casting announcements generate their own news cycle — but it also says something about how the brand sees its customer. The Miu Miu woman isn’t a blank canvas. She’s someone with a life, a career, opinions. She’s Olivia Colman, an Oscar winner who’d rather laugh at herself than pose. She’s Emma Corrin, shape-shifting between roles. She’s Jamie Bell, two decades past Billy Elliot and still taking interesting swings.

There’s also a quiet cleverness in casting women across a real age range. Colman, at 52, walking alongside twenty-something actors and Gen Z models, makes the clothes feel like they belong to everyone — which is exactly the point of a collection called “Here and Now.”

The Trend Nobody’s Tired Of Yet

Actors on runways, models in movies, pop stars designing handbags — the lines between fashion and entertainment have been blurring for years, and Paris Fashion Week’s closing days have been full of proof. Miranda Kerr made her own runway return at Stella McCartney’s show just days earlier, after nearly a decade away from the catwalk. The week has been one long reminder that the most interesting fashion moments now come from people who weren’t supposed to be there.

Colman’s appearance might be the best example of the bunch, though, precisely because it felt the least calculated. No weeks of teasing on Instagram. No stylist-curated “getting ready” content. Just an Oscar winner, a leather skirt suit, and a room full of people who couldn’t believe their luck.

What’s Next

With Pride and Prejudice on the horizon — reuniting her with runway co-star Corrin — and Wicker making its festival rounds, Colman’s dance card is as full as ever. The Miu Miu moment was a detour, but it was the kind of detour that makes you wonder what else she’s capable of. Based on the evidence so far, the answer is: pretty much everything.

For Miu Miu, the show was another reminder that the house knows exactly what it’s doing. “Here and Now” indeed. Sometimes the boldest fashion statement is simply putting the right person in the right clothes at the right moment — and letting the gasps do the rest.
