Before Patrick Dempsey became one of the most famous leading men on television, his life had taken a peculiar turn. The then 18-year-old Grey’s Anatomy star fell for actress and acting coach Rochelle “Rocky” Parker, a woman 26 years his senior who would become both his manager and first wife.
The nature of their relationship has attracted attention even decades later, due in part to the staggering age gap and also because Dempsey himself went on to speak openly about what he thought enticed him into a relationship at such a young age.
Patrick Dempsey Met Rocky Parker While Beginning His Acting Career
In 1984, while performing in a stage production of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs, Dempsey became acquainted with Parker. He was about 18, while Parker was approximately 44. In a further curious twist to their tale, the two were allegedly cast as an aunt and nephew in the production.
They quickly got to know one another on a personal level. Parker, much older and far more experienced in life as well as the business, also came aboard to assist with managing Dempsey’s burgeoning career. From what is documented of their relationship, they kept their romance under the radar at first.
Dempsey’s acting career grew in the latter half of the 1980s, making that blurring between professional and personal roles more significant.
Patrick Dempsey Was 21 When He Married Rocky Parker
His breakout young leading-man role came in the 1987 romcom Can’t Buy Me Love, and he starred in some more early films. In the same year, Dempsey wed Parker. Despite headlines saying he wed her at 18, Dempsey was actually 21 when they married and Parker was in her late 40s.
The couple also kept their marriage private for nearly two years, according to reports.
Dempsey Later Explained Why He Felt Drawn to the Relationship
Dempsey later reflected on the marriage, years after it ended, during a 2006 interview with Barbara Walters.
His assessment was surprisingly personal. In that period of his life, Dempsey called it a “Freudian nightmare” and said emotionally he felt he’d “needed a mother.” He also made mention of the fact that parts of the relationship lingered for years.
His remarks provide context for a relationship that could otherwise be explained through little more than its yawning gap in age.
Rocky Parker Was Also Closely Involved in Dempsey’s Career
Parker wasn’t just some considerably older lover. An adult with experience, she became intimately enmeshed in Dempsey’s career at a time when he was just starting to make his way. Parker was already a mother, and allegedly one of her sons was the same age as Dempsey.
Dempsey’s subsequent comments indicate that, with hindsight as an older man, he saw things differently than he had at 18 beginning his career.

Patrick Dempsey and Rocky Parker Later Divorced
The couple stayed married until the 1990s. They were divorced in 1994 after approximately seven years of marriage. Accounts from those days depict a bitter feud over the divorce. The divorce was punctuated by allegations that were later dropped or retracted, and therefore even details better established should be viewed with caution.
Parker passed away at the age of 74 in July 2014.
Dempsey, by then, had moved on to a very different chapter in his life.
Patrick Dempsey Later Started a Family With Jillian Fink
In 1999, Dempsey married makeup artist and hairstylist Jillian Fink. They later welcomed three children: daughter Talula and twin sons Darby and Sullivan.
It has not been an easy road for their relationship either. The couple began divorce proceedings in 2015, but reconciled and canceled the divorce in 2016.
Their marriage has since endured. Dempsey celebrated his 27th wedding anniversary with Fink in July of 2026, with her sharing a message looking back on their three children as well as the ‘good times’ and ‘bad times’ they shared.
It stands in contrast to his relationship with Parker that started when he was just out of his teens.
Dempsey’s First Marriage Remains an Unusual Chapter of His Life
Today Patrick Dempsey is mostly remembered for his very long career, especially (at least to mainstream audiences) as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy. His first marriage is perhaps one of the more surprising twists in his early story.
The fact that Parker was 26 years older than Dempsey is not what makes the story notable on its own. This is Dempsey’s own later theorizing of the relationship. Rather than dismissing the age gap as simply unconventional romance, he conceded his youth, his emotional needs and circumstances at the start of his career may have all factored in.
