Thirteen seasons into American Horror Story, the scariest thing on the red carpet Wednesday night was how genuinely sweet two of its stars are about each other. Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman showed up to the Season 13 premiere at the iconic Chelsea Hotel and spent their interviews doing what best friends do: gushing.

“We are the best of friends,” Lourd, 34, said. “This is the realest situation of all situations. This is literally top tier.” Grossman, 54, didn’t disagree. She just upgraded the terminology.

“This is my work wife, my life wife, my sister from another mister,” Grossman said. “I love Billie Lourd with all my heart and soul.”

An everyday kind of friendship

What makes their bond land isn’t the red-carpet soundbites — it’s how aggressively normal it sounds. The two talk nearly every day, and Lourd joked that when she’s doing school pickup runs, Grossman is simply the first call she makes.

“She’s one of those people I’ll call and I’ll just be like, ‘Hey, what are you doing man? I’m driving,’ and that is a real friendship,” Lourd said. No agenda, no news to report half the time. Just two people who actually like talking to each other.

Grossman has watched Lourd’s whole adult life unfold. “When I met Billie, Billie wasn’t married; Billie didn’t have kids,” she said. “Now Billie is married; she has two kids. She’s the most fantastic mom in the world.” Lourd shares son Kingston, 5, and daughter Jackson, 3, with husband Austen Rydell.

“This is really one of the greatest things this show has brought: the most amazing friendship,” Grossman added. “So this is my wife for life.”

Back for season 13

The pair met through the American Horror Story franchise, where Grossman returns as the deliciously awful Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt and Lourd plays Mallory. (Scream Queens fans will also remember Lourd as Chanel #3.)

Both admitted they never imagined the anthology series would make it to 13 seasons. Given how many shows flame out by year three, that’s fair. But then again, most shows don’t accidentally manufacture a lifelong friendship along the way — which, judging by Wednesday night, might be the franchise’s best plot twist yet.
