Mckenna Grace just made a fashion move that Hunger Games fans are going to be talking about for a very, very long time. The 20-year-old actress showed up to a Paris event on Tuesday night wearing a replica of one of the most iconic dresses in blockbuster movie history — the wedding gown Jennifer Lawrence wore as Katniss Everdeen in Catching Fire. Yes, that dress. The one that went up in flames on live television and turned into a black mockingjay.

Grace attended Elegance Is Authority: The Story, Style, And Power of Panem, a glitzy exhibition celebrating the fashion of the franchise, held at the Musée Rodin in Paris on October 6. She was there with her Sunrise on the Reaping co-star Joseph Zada, and the pair looked every bit the next generation of Panem royalty. But honestly? The dress stole the whole evening.

The Dress That Set the Internet on Fire (Again)

Let’s set the scene. In Catching Fire, Katniss Everdeen — played by Lawrence, who was at the height of her franchise fame — is paraded around the Capitol as the symbol of a brewing rebellion. At a televised wedding event, her stylist Cinna dresses her in an elaborate white wedding gown. Then, mid-interview, Cinna’s creation burns away on camera, revealing a black gown with outstretched mockingjay wings underneath. It was one of the defining costume moments of the 2010s, full stop.

For Grace to walk a red carpet in a faithful recreation of that exact gown — more than a decade later — isn’t just a cute fashion choice. It’s a passing of the torch. She is literally stepping into Lawrence’s Panem-sized shoes, and she’s doing it in couture.

Her version was custom-designed by Monique Lhuillier, the bridal and eveningwear house known for dressing actual brides and A-listers alike. The replica captured the gown’s dramatic silhouette: the structured bodice, the voluminous layered skirt, the ethereal, almost ghostly white fabric that made Katniss look like a Capitol doll. Fans who clicked through the photo galleries immediately recognized it. Social media lit up within minutes.

Her co-star didn’t phone it in either. Zada, who plays a young Haymitch Abernathy in the new film, paired an ERL suit with a sparkling Tiffany brooch — a nice little nod to the Capitol’s obsession with shine and spectacle.

A Fitting Tribute to Katniss Everdeen

There’s something genuinely poetic about Grace choosing this particular dress at this particular moment. When Catching Fire hit theaters in 2013, Grace was seven years old. She grew up watching Lawrence turn Katniss into a generational icon — a character who defined an entire era of young-adult storytelling. Now she’s playing Maysilee Donner, a tribute from District 12 in the prequel, and she’s honoring the woman who made the role she inhabits possible.

Fashion tributes like this are having a real moment. Remember when Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo spent an entire press tour dressed in pink and green as their characters? Or when Barbie turned Margot Robbie into a real-life doll for months? There’s a term for it now — “method dressing” — and Grace just pulled it off with a reference so deep that only true Hunger Games devotees clocked it instantly.

And look, she knows exactly what she’s doing. Speaking to W Magazine this week about the upcoming press tour, Grace said she’s thrilled about all the looks, all the premieres, and all the times she’ll get to meet fans. If this Paris event is any indication of where the tour is headed, buckle up. She’s clearly having fun with it, and fans are eating it up.

Who Is Maysilee Donner? Mckenna Grace’s Big Panem Role

For those who haven’t read Suzanne Collins’ latest novel, Maysilee Donner is no background character. She’s one of the District 12 tributes in the 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell — and she becomes Haymitch’s unlikely ally in the arena. Their bond is one of the emotional anchors of the story. Readers who tore through the book when it published in March 2025 know that Maysilee is fierce, sharp, and deeply human — a character who leaves a real mark on the Games and on Haymitch himself.

When the casting was announced in April 2025, Deadline described the Maysilee role as the closest thing to the Katniss part — the most sought-after role in the whole production. Grace winning it was a major statement about where her career is heading.

And what a career it’s already been. Grace has been working basically since she was a toddler. She broke through as the prodigy kid in Gifted (2017) opposite Chris Evans, terrified audiences as a young Theodora Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, played a young Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, and anchored the new generation of Ghostbusters films as Phoebe Spengler in Afterlife and Frozen Empire. She’s done horror (Annabelle Comes Home), prestige TV (The Handmaid’s Tale), and family comedies (Troop Zero) — sometimes all in the same year. Oh, and she’s also released music. She’s not yet old enough to rent a car in the US, and she’s got a résumé most forty-year-olds would envy.

Her upcoming slate is honestly stacked: the Regretting You adaptation, Blumhouse’s Kiss of Death, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Scream 7, and Anniversary. But Sunrise on the Reaping is the crown jewel — the kind of franchise role that turns promising young actors into household names. Just ask Lawrence.

Joseph Zada and the Next Generation of Panem

Standing beside Grace in Paris was Joseph Zada, the Australian newcomer carrying the weight of playing a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy — a character Woody Harrelson made unforgettable across four films. That’s not a small ask. Harrelson’s Haymitch was equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking, and haunted, and Zada has to show us how that man was made.

According to the film’s casting announcements, this version of Haymitch is closer in spirit to Katniss herself: angry, protective, and unwilling to play the Capitol’s game. Zada’s previous credits include the Australian series Invisible Boys and the film The Speedway Murders — he’s a fresh face, which is kind of the point. Lionsgate has a track record of plucking relative unknowns and turning them into stars through this franchise.

The rest of the ensemble is genuinely stacked. Whitney Peak plays Haymitch’s love interest, Lenore Dove Baird. Elle Fanning takes on a young Effie Trinket. Jesse Plemons plays a young Plutarch Heavensbee (the role the late Philip Seymour Hoffman originated). Then there’s Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Iris Apatow, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Ben Wang, and Billy Porter — plus Ralph Fiennes stepping into President Coriolanus Snow’s shoes. That’s an absurd amount of talent for one movie.

When Sunrise on the Reaping Hits Theaters

The film is directed by Francis Lawrence — the same Francis Lawrence who helmed every Hunger Games film since Catching Fire — with a screenplay by Billy Ray, who co-wrote the original trilogy’s adaptations. It’s based on Collins’ novel, which sold a staggering 1.5 million copies in its first week across the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The five existing films have pulled in more than $3.3 billion at the global box office. Safe to say the stakes are high.

The story picks up on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games — 24 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteers for her sister. It’s the Second Quarter Quell, which means double the tributes: 48 kids from the districts, twice the carnage, twice the drama. We get to see how Haymitch won his Games, what broke him, and how the Capitol’s cruelty shaped the man who would one day mentor Katniss and Peeta.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters on November 20 — just over a month from now. The official trailer is already out, and judging by the reaction to Grace’s Paris moment, the hype machine is officially in overdrive.

If a single dress can break the internet six weeks before release, imagine what the premiere tour is going to do. Mckenna Grace just told us exactly how she plans to spend the next month: giving the fans fashion moments worth remembering. May the odds of a flawless press tour be ever in her favor.
