Vikings Season 7: Is the Hit Series Really Returning or Are the Rumors False?

Years after Vikings sailed into television history, fans are still asking whether Ragnar Lothbrok’s world could return for another chapter. But despite all that online excitement, the official position is far less mysterious: the original Vikings series concluded with its sixth season, and no seventh season has been officially announced.

The final episodes eventually brought several major character journeys to a close. Amazon obtained the first-run U.S. streaming rights to the final ten episodes in December 2020, with reporting at the time explicitly describing them as the concluding episodes of Michael Hirst’s drama.

That matters because the series did not simply disappear while waiting for another renewal. Season 6 was designed and marketed as its ending.

Is Vikings Season 7 Officially Confirmed?

As of August 2026, there has been no official announcement from HISTORY confirming a seventh season of the original drama. The network’s current Vikings pages continue to present Season 6 as the latest season, while credible industry reporting around the franchise has focused on other productions rather than a revival of the original show.

This is where online confusion can begin. Videos with dramatic titles, fictional release dates and imagined casts can look surprisingly convincing, particularly when they use footage from earlier seasons or AI-generated visuals. That means neither the original series nor its Netflix sequel currently has another confirmed season waiting to be released.

Michael Hirst Is Returning to Vikings With Bloodaxe

There is, however, genuine new Viking television news that may be contributing to renewed interest.

Michael Hirst, the creator of Vikings, has teamed up with his son Horatio Hirst for Bloodaxe, a new historical drama for Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios says the series is inspired by the story of Erik Bloodaxe and his wife Gunnhild as they fight for power in 10th-century Norway.

The project has already received significant backing. In June 2026, Prime Video officially renewed Bloodaxe for a second season before the first season had even premiered. Michael and Horatio Hirst are creators, writers and executive producers on the series.

Despite Hirst’s involvement and the familiar Norse setting, Amazon presents Bloodaxe as its own series. It should therefore not be confused with an official continuation of Ragnar’s original television story.

Could the Original Vikings Ever Return?

Television franchises can be revived years after apparently definitive endings, so it would be impossible to say that a return could never happen. Popular characters can appear in spin-offs, prequels, special projects or reimagined stories if producers and rights holders decide there is enough audience interest.

But possibility is different from confirmation.

At present, there is no announced production schedule, official cast list, release date or network order for another season of the original series. The confirmed activity from Michael Hirst is instead centered on Bloodaxe, while Netflix has already closed the book on Valhalla.

For fans wondering about Vikings Season 7, the safest conclusion is simple: the rumors may be exciting, but there is currently no official evidence that it is happening. The original story ended after six seasons, Valhalla finished after three, and the next major Viking drama from Michael Hirst is Bloodaxe. Until HISTORY, the studio or Hirst announces otherwise, any claimed seventh-season release date or trailer should be treated as unofficial.
